About my teaching practice.... Crochet is my pride and joy, and where I first began my creative venture at 7 years old...I create art and teach today to all ages. 95% of my students have never crocheted *and* everyone walks away making what they signed up for. My most popular classes are project-based, even with each student having zero experience with a crochet hook. I teach crochet in a visual language - I create a story that is visually appealing and captures the step-by-step process that works with every student - and each student is different. As an additional skillset and from my former design background, I have added leather goods, hand and machine sewing, weaving, basket weaving and other mediums to workshops and practices. Crochet is a complex art skill using a dominant hand (I teach both right and left!) and really utilizing the brain in new ways...I love teaching crochet as I find it boosts many benefits in everyone's take-away: confidence, empowerment, new-found creativity (and even to try/learn other new crafts of skills that might have been intimidating prior to), self expression, memory/cognitive strength, community, and overall self-care: both mental and emotional health. The use of making with your hands has profound benefits with current and new tasks, ways of problem solving, and putting things together. Crochet cannot be replicated by machine...! Each stitch has its own complexity by the creator, who decides the tension, the level of design, shape and color. Trying, repeating, processing what could work - how another possible way could also be better...Without failure, rather success is all parts of the outcome, and the beauty of handmade is the prize. Crochet cannot be made by machine, which makes each stitch more beautiful and the final piece more understood of the manual labor, patience, thoughtful details, and appreciation of the creator as a skilled artist. No matter the level, we are constantly learning new ideas and challenges.
